why would you need a laptop when doing zoology? sorry, got off topic
bare in mind with laptops you get what you pay for - avoid tescos and woolworths like the plague. Look at Dell as they often have good offers on come September, and if you can spring the extra cash, Apple do student discounts through some universities i believe, however i don't know how extensive these discounts are.
The other thing is that some universities offer subsidised laptops which are 'recommended' for that course... they are often a reasonable spec and are dead cheap as the uni buys them directly from manufacturer and then subsidises them even further for the students HOWEVER this depends on what uni you are going to. Might want to ask on the students forum for more information on that.

I did marine biology for my BSc. The laptop was so handy for those field trips and was easy to take home in the summer!
I have had some great experiances with dell laptops lately, have started a trend in my office!

There is a Dell offer at the moment I read about on another forum for a Dell Inspiron 1300 with 512 RAM and a printer for £369 inc VAT and Delivery. Dell has offers of this type at least once a month!
Keep an eye on the bargain forums.

That's not the best deal ever because the printer is worthless.
I paid £350.75 and got the 15.4" screen, 6 cell battery but only 256mb RAM. An extra 512mb of RAM is going to cost me £26 and I'll fit it myself0 -
Don't ignore Tesco's... the £299 Acer one is Ok. The warranty is provided directly by Acer it seems, on a return basis. This is the same as the standard Dell RTB warranty.
What I would mention though, is if you want it for field trips and want to use it outdoors then maybe it's not sutiable, and I wouldn't recommend the Dell for that either. You'd really need to get something "tougher".0
