What do you recommend that has real-time scan and daily updates?

    They are all pretty heavyweight these days, but Avast is easily customisable, you can set it to just install the file scanner (ignore all the bloated stuff like p2p shield, link scanner, email scanner, id protection etc) and it runs fine on my netbook without taking up much resources at all.

    +1 for Avast too - I used to love AVG but it became more and more bloated so tried Avast and since then haven't looked back.
