i have just recieved a courtesy phone call from my gas and electric supplier e-on and they have informed me that my dd will be increased from £68 to £148 after meter readings , im not disputing the fact of the rise in dd but myself my partner and little boy have only lived here 6 months when we first moved they reduced our dd within the first month from £87 to £68 and now suddenly we are hit with this steep rise at this moment in time we can not afford to pay the £148 they are demanding !! would it be plauseable for me to offer to pay them £100 instead of £148 can they refuse this please help my partners 6mths pregnant and in tears . Any feed back would be much appreciated and sorry for any bad spelling

    You paying catch up because you DD havent matched up to your bills.

    You can ask to pay a little less but ultimately you will have to pay it.

    Hi smudger 1977 - From you post it appears that you moved in, in October 2009 which is the start of the most expensive 6 months of one years energy bills.
    The basic idea of monthly D/D's is that over a year you pay for what you use in a year, and whether or not your D/Ds are too high or too low can only be truly judged when you reach the annual anniversary of your account.

    Unfortunately, most of the suppliers now pursue a policy of trying to get all accounts into a zero debt status at this time of year, no matter at time of year the customer's account started, but you can fight this.

    You have bills for the 6 winter months, if you deduct 80% from the gas bill and 20% from the electric, you will have a good indication of the summer bills.
    Add these two together and see just how much your 12 D/Ds are above or below the total.

    My guess is that the original D/D level, before EON played about with it, at £87 was probably about right, so you may have a bit of debt that would not be paid off at the one year anniversary, but whatever the situation WRITE to EON with your figures, and if you will have debt at the year end, offer to raise your D/D level to clear it over the summer months.

    Last time E.on tried to up my DD payments by extortionate amounts, I called them and negotiated a compromise payment - I did however, have to clear the current balance on the account.

    If you can, clear the arrears and then get them to agree the £87.

    Best thing here is to contact us so we can have a good look through the account. Just a few thoughts to be going on with.

    Is there an outstanding balance on the account now we have billed to accurate meter readings? If this is the case, your Direct Debit will have been increased to take account of this.

    Let us know you are struggling with the revised amount; it may be possible to spread the outstanding balance over a longer period. This will lower the monthly payments to, hopefully, a more manageable amount.

    The important thing is to make sure the payments cover ongoing usage. Failure to do this will only result in further problems down the line.

    Going forward, make sure you on the right tariff? For instance, there are extra discounts available for managing your account online. Details are on our website - there's a link in my Personal Profile.

    Also, pop your details on to one of the comparison sites. This will show our tariffs as well as those of all the other suppliers. Make sure you are on the best deal for you.

    I agree with Malc completely. However, if there is an oustanding balance, don't shop around until it's paid off ;)
