So what do you say to the fact that my wife and I have been saving for over 4 years, have a deposit that is 2 times my salary, yet I still cannot afford the home my parents bought when they first got married (after saving for 1 year)? We have been saving 80% of takehome by the way.

When you consider my father was not earning a realative income anywhere near mine, my mother stayed at home to bring us up and we are planning to get a mortgage on 2 incomes (nice to be able to actually HAVE kids, never mind, I will leave that to the chavette scum), its easy to see you are talking complete and utter hoop.

Au contraire, you are displaying exactly the "entitled to" attitude he's on about.

Want to point out the stage at which they had to pay off huge debts generated by their parents (IE PFI and pensions) that we will pay for?

What about WW2  I trust you won't be receiving a pension from the public purse then?

Oh god I so hate this comparison to yester year where comparisons are made on technology that wasn't even available then.

It seems to be the ultimate flippant excuse.

When used the other way, it always comes down to "hey laddy, in my day, a washing machine cost a months wages, we had to rent a grundig TV as we couldn't afford to buy one, and our beta max cost us 3 weeks wages, you don['t know how hard it was, infact it was harder to buy a house".

But it's used both ways, all the time. "In my day, we didn't have mobile phones, internettings, computers and expensive trainers, we went without (even though you couldn't have possibly gone with as the technology did ot exist) and were able to afford a house".

I agree it’s impossible to compare today with 30 or 40 years ago but why do so many people keep bringing up in the past you could buy a 4 bed detached in your 20s or my dad bought his house for 2.5x his wage.

I bought my first house nearly 40 years ago and it was a terrace and it was 5.5x my salary and I had to move twenty miles to get a house I could afford. It’s not just the cost of things it’s the everything I got married and bought my first house at 21 most of my friends did the same so by the time we were in our 30s we were on our second or third home. I started saving for my house when I was 19 and my idea of a night out was quite drink at the local with a few friends. We didn’t have the temptation of mobile phones, ipods etc so were able to save a high percentage of our salary. When I moved in I had nothing no TV no phone no washing machine etc.

I am not saying were saints or anything and if I were born today I would be the same as everybody else is now. All I am saying is it is just as unreasonable to compare today’s house to prices then as it is to compare what we had and didn’t have.

LOL! You have problems that span much further than the affordability of a house my friend.

It's like watching a car crash in slow motion....

With instability issues like that, I'm quite surprised the MoD lets him anywhere near a sharp object, let alone an aircraft.

Perhaps they're both the same person. Wonder how many other personalities it has?

How can we seriously go back to a time where young 20'somethings can all go out and buy a nice detached house somewhere? If that was the case what about the established 40'something doctors etc? They could surely go out and buy a castle in that scenario.

    I dont agree.

The doctors in my town live in the nicest streets in detached period properties. Its not unreasonably to suggest that those on above average wages where both partners are working should be able to afford the above average properties in town.

The housing crash resulted in a shift in wealth. My parents and millions of others are now sitting virtually mortgage free in a property that costs 5 times as much as mine.

Surely there will come a point where through inheritance a lot of that money will make its way down the food chain etc.
