Santander Minimum Withdrawals

I went in to a Santander branch today to lodge a couple of cheques and as I wanted some cash asked for £30 to be told that a change in T+C's meant the minimum counter withdrawal was £31 . As I said to the girl "who dreams up these ideas? " She said it was to speed up queuing ??? . I sugested more staff would solve that and anyway if I had not been lodging cheques I would have used a machine of which the branch had several and she agreed with that .
I can't really see folk who ONLY want cash waiting in a branch queue when they can get use of an ATM .

I suggest you go to my local branches - remember some people are very nervous about ATMs and prefer to do things the traditional way.0 -
OK then, I'll withdraw £31 in that case.
*cashier gives you your £31*
I'd like to pay in £1 please.0 -

The cash withdrawal over £30 only has been in place since October last year. It is called Project Red. In response to customer feedback they are limiting the use of the counter for certain transactions. The reason is to cut down on queues. They will not employ more cashiers as this obviously costs money. Instead they want you to use the ATM and internet banking. The branches are targeted on this hence the reason they wont serve you even if there is no queue.0

Fair enough if that's all you want but not if you are doing other business at the same time ...0 -
Nationwide and HSBC have similar restrictions on certain counter transactions, as do almost all providers of basic bank accounts.0

I agree. I am not nervous about ATM's though, just I finally twigged that popping into the branch and waiting in a queue of 2 or 3 is quicker than an ATM line of 5, 10 or more0 -
If it really ticks you off, don't use a Santander ATM.
Go and use the ATM of another provider as this costs Santander money. Make them pay for their decision not to serve you.
In fact, if you want £30 then spend a little time withdrawing £10 in 3 different transactions. This will then cost them 3 times as much.0
