Frpm the link quoted above, it looks as though she is resigned to losing the income support. So she will not be ripping anyone off.

The OP posted on the other thread before this thread! All sounds a bit strange to me ... two different stories?!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Even worse you could be prosecuted for fraud as you choose to invest £30K in your pension whilst living off state handouts, its called deprivation of capital and its a criminal offence to dispose of available capital in order to claim benefits. QUOTE]

It is NOT an offence to deprive yourself of capital. DWP would simply treat the claimant as having the capital.

You would be ripping off me and every other hard working decent person paying their taxes to support spongers with £30k in the bank that dont want to spend it or get a job !!

I think you'll find that she stated she was desperately looking for work!

Not sure how she is getting IS instead of JSA, but yeah the state is there for people who genuinly need it and I wouldnt be happy that someone who isnt in a desperate position carries on claiming because it will only be at the expense of genuine claimants and taxpayers.
  • Since she mentioned recently becoming a single parent again on the other thread, I presume the flat was in joint names and her ex forced the sale, otherwise the sensible thing to do would be to avoid selling while still unemployed.

Whilst I agree it sucks she just has to realise better to be in a position where you living of 30k and can perhaps spend some of it on luxuries then be worried about paying bills, fighting DWP for missing payments and so on. The line has to be drawn somewhere and 16k seems a high number.
  • Big thanks to all the people out there that responded. The answer to the question that many of you asked `why are you selling anyway` is, this was my marital home (sorry dodgy spelling), then i got into another relationship after my husband left and this too went wrong. Its along story but the plan was to sell move into rented accomodation with ex and my son then i would work full time and he would work part time to be able to pick my son up. We couldnt afford to pay the mortgage in this place (i am exchanging today) and i certainly cant afford it on my own. Also we ran up debts together which i am now left to pay off. Now we have split (he`s been in prison) i am forced to start again on my own, like plenty of women seem to do many times (and am sure men). Its nice to know there are some supportive people out there and i appreeciate your concern.
But i would also like to say that i have no intention of ripping off the state,i want to work as i have stated and am applying furiously now,i was just asking advice. Obviously it provoked some strong feeling in a couple of people about me being supported by the taxes they pay. Lets hope you never have to go on benefit as its very hard to live off.
Anyway thanks again to all,am off to finish packing :D
p.s and no i wont be claiming benefits.

Hi- You mention being a single parent. You know you only need to work 16 hours a week to claim WTC and CTC don't you. I have no idea if any savings affect amount you receive but maybe another member would know??

A friend of mine got her WTC on her avon round, she had to average 16 hours a week, but everything she did counted towards this, so it meant taking on a bit bigger round, hand delivering brochures and orders, so it took longer instead of taking car. Her wages from Avon were small but really she was living on the tax credit top up money and the maintainance from her ex that she was allowed to keep all of. Because of the flexibility she could also pick kids up from school, be at home in school hols and was free to attend interviews at any time, which led to a different better paid job after a year or so.

Maybe look into something like this, just to tide you over till you find something more suitable.
  • I've never been as wealthy as I was on income support! Had no rent to pay, no council tax, and about £200 a week spending money as I was in recipt of DLA!

Have you tried employment agencies? When I've been out of work, Ive got a job within a week through an agency be it on a temporary basis to cover holiday or something. Office jobs are ten a penny, admin and secretary work etc.

There's always McDonalds (believe they have some excellent benefits!) if your desperate search for a job amounts to nothing. If you've got a pair of hands and a certain amount of intelligence there is no reason why anyone should be out of work, there are many cafe's, bars, temp agencies, fast food places, shop work.... the list is endless!
