New car road tax

Hi all

Buying a new car :)

But I have one question I can't seem to find anything to answer (and the DVLA customer 'service' line just tells me they are too busy and hangs up on me).

How does it work with road tax discs? Is one supplied with the car or do I need to go to the post office to fill in an application form? (given that I have no documents besides the order form and the form that asked for the details I wanted to register).

    Old car, see the dealer.

New car will come with 6 months or 1 year.

Broker - likely you will need to pay extra.

It is a new car, and we are being forced to pay a CO2-linked 'showroom tax' which I believe is first-year road tax or VED as it apparently should be called, but nowhere is totally clear on the procedure.

The DVLA were less than hopeless, when I finally just got through all they wanted me to do was tell them about the documentation I don't get until I actually complete the purchase and in the end their advice was 'well just check to make sure the disc is on the car before you drive off'. Their website was no better.

    Thanks DVLA.

IMHO Honest John is the best all round website for advice for motorists; his page in the Telegraph each Saturday is a good read too.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

For the OP, based on the 3 new cars I have bought and assuming the system hasn't greatly changed since early 2008.

Prior to getting the car the dealer should contact you with the registration number, you may well have to sign paperwork at this stage. The registration number will enable you to get the insurance, and the dealer need the insurance certificate to issue the tax.

It is possible that any inclusive insurance may speed up the process, but they cannot get the tax without it. Many dealers now process and issue the car tax themselves, ours did and the tax disc was issued on the Sunday we collected the car, but that doesn't remove them needing to see the insurance.
