Sash window refurbishment in North East

I'm looking for a decent affordable company to refurbish some sash windows in a flat I'm about to move in to. The timber is in great condition although they have been screwed shut and are caked with paint. I managed to get one open yesterday after about 5-10 minutes with a scraper, the screws came out easy. The sash pulleys and weights also seem to be in good condition. So essentially I'll need them all stripping, the screw holes repaired, painting, then draught proofed.

Does anybody have any recommendations?

  • OK I got one of these to bits today and there is a bit more work than anticipated on one or two of them but I don't think there is anything beyond repair with a bit of patience. The corner of the bottom rail on one has a little damage from damp but I think some filler should sort it out. A few of the screws were very stubborn and wouldn't even come out with a screw extraction bit so I had to take off the staff beads and get a hacksaw blade in. I think i'll fill and paint the screw heads.

I think I read you can get direct plastic replacements for the parting beads that draught seal and eliminate the rattles, does anybody know a supplier of these and whether it's worth draught proofing or not with regard to losing the ventilation etc. Would I be better off just stripping down, repairing any damage with filler, replacing the painted up/broken sash cords, repairing any glazing putty then repainting?
