I have recieved a bill for £3290.43pence from scottish power, i have only been in this 1 bed flat for 5 months, i have minimal electric appliances and all are energy efficent, no electric fires. My usage from october 09to december 09 was 906kwyh , and from december 09 to march 15th 2010 29,556kwyh, there is no way i use this amount, i pay £41 a month to them for electricity since i moved in flat.

I requested to get someone out to check meter which was done last week and they told me that the electrity from the upstairs flat is going through my meter,(house converted into 2 flats) i have since informed the lanlord who says he will get new meters put in, but in the meantime my bill is going to get bigger by the day, and i have been told my scottish power i am liable for this bill as power in my name. I am on state pension as retired and can no way pay this amount.

My meter is in hallway of upper flat, so can not get accesss to it very often, the upstairs tentants meter has no suppplier and is not working.

Something wrong here unless the upstairs flat is growing illegal plants - and even then 29,556kWh in 3 months is just not possible.

I suggest someone has misread the meter - is it one of the old fashioned dial meters? - easy to misread as the dials are numbered clockwise and anti-clockwise alternately.

Thanks Cardew for reply, had a laugh at the thought of illegal plants growing in upstairs flat , they do have a large loft!, went to citizens advice today and they were very helpful and advised me to go to the trading standards,i then went to library to print the bill out as i do not have a printer, and guess what my bill has now shrunk to a total of £713.65, plus vat so total is £952.60, and from october 6th 2009 to 22nd march 2010 usage is now 8064 kwh, daily average 48kwh. I will be seeing landord on monday so he will have to sort meter problem out as most of this bill is from upstairs flat electric running through my meter.
