I'm not sure, but if you've backed up your data it's worth a try to restore from your external hd.

What pc is it? Have you got a hidden partition to restore to factory settings maybe?

It is an Acer Aspire. The drive is partitioned into C D and Compaq partitions. Don't know what the Compaq is and use the D for all photos/home movies. Even if they weren't on D, there wouldn't be enough room to restore factory settings on it. Plus, I had enough trouble with the acer stuff first time round and don't really want to put it back on. If I was going to restore the whole system, I would really want to use my backup in Nero BackItUp.

Can I not just pick out the Dllcache using the restore facility in Nero and re-install it in my system 32 folder?

Alternatively, this whole problem happened because I uninstalled McAfee and installed kaspersky, then did a system restore to before kas was on the machine but obviously the sys restore did not bring back McAfee. Am wondering if a simple re-install of McAfee would do the trick?
