what plants to put in hanging baskets?

I would love to get some hanging baskets at the front of the house to brighten it up a bit. I have been sent some free seeds (10) of Nemesia Nebula Mix, so thought I would try some of these. What else would grow nicely in a basket? Is it worth growing anything edible as is facing onto a main road (country road, but still main road).

Hope you can help?

Thanks

nemesia is not the best plant to grow in a basket, a bit straggly.
There are lots of books available giving all sorts of plants you can use, try the library they may have them.
I use surfinias, fuchsia, bacopa, verbena, geraniums, begonias, helichrysum, nepeta, and many others. Don't do as recommended on a gardening programme and use Regal Geraniums, it won't work.
Sown in the warm now the nemesia make a great bedding plant for planting out in May.

I have strawberries in my hanging basket! It is by the front door, and I have 'perpetual' strawberries, so last year they we could 'pinch a strawberry' as we came home from wokr even in October.

Sweet peas are nice in baskets so are nasturtiums very cheap and quick to grown from seed
  • I'm about to do a dwarf lavender in mine surrounded by different varieties of thyme, cheap and very fragrant. Got the idea from http://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/pots-containers/category/hanging-baskets/ - well worth looking at.
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Make sure you get the correct sweet peas, the more vigorous, normal types tend to just go up the chains.
