If the OP's husband is the driver, then is not acceptable for him not to be able to see out of the rear window.

So what do van drivers do then?

I have no idea. I would imagine though, that there are no children sitting in the back of the van - ergo it is a van and not a car. It is my understanding that it is not permitted to block the rear windscreen when driving a car, be it with clothes, boxes or children.

If I am incorrect I am sure someone will correct me.
