Well, mebbe Jersey isn't the place to go after all Dave!
My ex m-i-l used to go way back in the late 70's she loved it!!
I think a lot of us have missed out on many beautiful places in the uk simply because fares & hotel prices here are/were scandalous compared to foreign climes...however now that higher air fares and the Euro/pound parity have come into play I think we'll find the Uk is fast becoming a favourite again.
Just a shame we can't rely on the darn weather!:cool:Knowledge is often mistaken for intelligence. This is like mistaking a cup of milk for the whole cow.0 -
Can I just say, thanks to everyone for their suggestions with regard to other places:D...and yes I know there are some beautiful places in the UK, but this is a whim of mine, somewhere I've always had the urge to see, and have never (even tho' I've travelled quite extensively in my life) ever got around to doing, and I lived just over the water in Naval quarters in Gsoport, and still never managed to get over to visit the IOW!:D
when we moved to west london, we were amazed at how many locals had never been to windsor castle or hampton court!Get some gorm.0 -
I have very mixed memories of Jersey. We spent several summer holidays there, booked as packages from one of the specialist companies, including a good hotel, the half-hour flight out of gatwick and a hire car waiting at the other end.
It's a stunningly beautiful island, especially if you go during the Battle of The Flowers when all the flower-decked floats are displayed around the island. We had some wonderful times there, staying at St.Brelades Bay and driving around to different places and usually ending up in a lovely clifftop pub/restaurant we found that served the most amazing seafood salads I've ever tasted.
Then, on what was to be our final visit, it all went pear-shaped starting with the pilot announcing we would be experiencing significant turbulence on our approach to Jersey, but we were not to panic! You just know there is something to panic about when they say that.
We arrived in monsoon conditions which lasted throughout the entire holiday. Out of 14 days, it rained solidly for 13 and the sun only came out ... yes you've guessed ... as we drove to the airport to leave on the last day
I have never experienced a more miserable holiday, not even in Cornwall and that can deliver some !!!!!! weather. We spent our time either walking nearly bent double against the wind and rain in sweaty pakamacs, or sitting in the hire car on top of cliffs trying to see the sea (fat chance) through the deluge! Even our favourite seafood pub had closed down. Probably a bit like the IOW, there is really nothing to do or see in those conditions, especially when many of the tourist attractions were shut due to flooding! We swore we'd never return.
We arrived home to be told by neighbours they'd had a glorious fortnight in Epsom   . And the icing on the cake came when a couple of weeks later I got a call from the travel company ... Oh, Mr O. we are putting together next year's brochure and we see you've travelled to Jersey with us on several occasions and we wondered if you'd like to give us a few quotes about your experiences on the island that we could publish?
Curiously, my comments were never published :rotfl:
Dave.
Very unlucky!!!! Unsurprisingly, on average - i.e. when Dave isn't around;) - Jersey has the most sunshine hours in the whole of the UK.:D
Lots of touristy things to do in Jersey - one of my favourites was the Shell house & garden: http://www.jersey.co.uk/attractions/shellgarden/index.html0 -
Thanks for that link #HA, that looks like it might be quite something!
We have a 'shell house'' very near us in Spain it was built by a Spanish artist, in amongst the Cave houses and is a very popular with the tourists but not on the scale of those gardens!Knowledge is often mistaken for intelligence. This is like mistaking a cup of milk for the whole cow.0 -
