Sky HD and 'Magic Eye'

Hi,

I've got Sky HD, and want it in the bedroom also. Don't want to pay £199 for another HD box and multiroom charges, so thinking of running cable and adding a magic eye. It doesn't matter about the channel being the same in both rooms.

My question is, has anyone done this from an HD box to another HD ready TV? I have a 32" LCD in the bedroom, and I know it won't be an HD picture coming via the magic eye cable but I don't want to waste my time if picture quailty is really poor using this method.

Anyone done it?

Picture quality will be the same as running the cable from a non HD box, the fact either end are HD will have no effect.

Just do a quick trial by running the cable to the TV in the lounge, see if it will be OK for you.
  • Ok, thanks.

I haven't purchased the cable or magic eye yet, so could someone just tell me if the picture quality differs at all using the magic eye and cable?

    Thanks.

If you follow the normal method of connecting with a magic eye "also known as tv-link", then the second TV will receive Sky input via a Scart cable, so the picture quality will only be standard definition. It won't be "poor" at all, it just won't be HD. To see this difference, unplug the HDMI cable that is currently connecting the Sky box to your main TV, then replace it with a scart cable (£1 or so in supermarkets) to connect the box to the TV. Your picture on your main TV will now only be SD and you can decide if this is acceptable.

You can get an HD picture on your second TV by instead connecting the TV directly to the Sky HD box with a very long HDMI cable. You will still need a normal RF cable running to the magic eye (to be able to use the remote control). Assuming the second TV is a good few metres from the box, such a long HDMI cable is likely to be quite expensive, and you'll need to buy an HDMI splitter because your Sky box only has one HDMI output socket.

Sorry, that is incorrect the second TV will not be receiving the signal via scart it will be fed using RF via Co-Ax cable so will not be as good as a scart feed. Very easy to trial I'm sure you have a spare fly lead lying around.

You are now asking if the quality differs using cable and eye, if you mean differs from HDMI then yes, massively.
