PC works on bench - not stood up

This one was doing my head in.
Friends PC stopped working. Seemed like cpu failure.
Fans and harddrive were powering up, but the usual beep from the internal speaker didn't occur. No power to the monitor (on board sound and graphics).
Stripped down to bare bones, RAM sticks, unplugged all drives, then tried to power up and got the beep.
So I start to install the sticks of RAM, drives, until finally I plug everything back in and it still powers up and works fine.
Ok, so maybe a loose connection.
Stand the PC back up, push back into its normal place and, nothing, back to square one again.

While the PC is on its side, it will work fine.
When it stands up it won't power up.
I don't have a spare PSU right nowbut I'm just wondering if there is a short somewhere inside the PSU?
I have insulated the motherboard from the side of the case, just covering the possibility of a case short.
Anyone else had anything similar?

Oh yeah, before I forget. If the PC is on it's side and fires up ok, It can be stood up and it will work fine. If you then shut down, or even just restart it, then it will refuse to work - reverting back to it's comatose state.

Sounds like a broken wire or dry solder joint somewhere. I would start by trying another PSU and go from there.......
