Geforce 400 series paper release tomorrow

Hard to call which way this will go. They've done a good job of keeping benchmarks under wraps. I usually buy ATI cards for the bang/buck value, but I really hope nvidia don't fail on this. Competition is the only thing keeping the PC gaming sector alive.

Early unofficial bencharks put it slightly ahead of ATI performance wise, as you'd expect, I'm more interested in prices. Hoping it might force the 5000 series down a bit.

Few of the guys in my gaming clan have mentioned this, so it seems to have created a bit of a stir. Like yourself though, I have always gone with ATI cards.

Have seen a few preliminary benchmarks, and a bit sketchy on exact details such as drivers etc.

First impressions, its a beast. A power hungry, expensive, noisy beast, but a beast nonetheless. Looking deeper, you'd have expected better performance considering its 6 months extra it took to come to market. Its a good 20% faster than the 5870, and matches the £600 5970 in a couple of benchmarks.

Read in a few places, expected prices for the 480 to be near £430. The ati 5870 can be had for less than £300 and the 5850 for £220. AFAIK, the 5970 is 2x 5850's slapped together, so tbh, nvidia may need to adjust their prices.

Looks very underwhelming tbh. Fermi was supposed to be nVidia's Great Leap Forward, a whole new architecture that would blow ATI away. After so many delays and announcements, to end up with a card that is 50% more expensive than an ATI HD5870 but has about the same performance is hugely disappointing.

Not slagging off nvidia for the sake of it, I really wanted them to hit it out of the park so that ATI would get some real competition and drive down prices again. But it looks like ATI will have nothing to fear at all from this empty offering (whenever it does finally become available to purchase, which is not looking likely any time soon)
