OP there have been a number of threads on gas pilot light consumption and it can be very high.

Yes, I've read them, that's why I wanted to make sure my calculations were correct, hence my post.

It is possible to turn down the pilot flame on most boilers and as long as it covers the tip of the thermocouple it will be OK.

Sorry, I probably should have stated in the original post (I didn't think it would get this in-depth :-) ) that this boiler is quite old and doesn't seem to have a user option to modify the pilot light. I'm assuming an installer can do it when he takes the cover off, but there's nothing for plebs like me. We still have the (deteriorating) user instructions and it doesn't mention anything other than starting and turning off the pilot light.

The pilot light doesn't look any bigger than 3cm to me, which seems about right. The thermocouple is right in the middle of the flame so it could probably come down a bit.

I reckon I need to get an engineer out to have a look at it.

    Cheers

  • I turn my boiler off during the summer when I don't need the heating to come on timer. It's easy enough to relight it when I need a tankful of water, which is only every few days as I have an electric shower.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
