on the ipod you need to convert it to an audio book (not an mp3, see here )

Its hardware I'd like to have speed up the playback ,rather than altering it via software everytime

Change the format to a pod cast and then you will be able to play double speed!
This is where the signature goes, so here it is SIGNATURE!

This may or may not work. I've not tried it, but it may work.

In iTunes, get info on the podcast and you should find *somewhere* the option to change the type to Music/PodCast/Audiobook - change it to an audiobook. Then delete it from your iPod and resync.

Else, bob_man_uk has given you the better option.

Much later edit: just realised I said the same thing as gmidgley. Sorry, will read all of the thread before posting :)

You don't need to convert anything, just import the mp3 into iTunes and change through right click / info to podcast or audiobook

How are you expecting that the hardware is going to do it? It can only do what the software/firmware tells it to do.

To answer your question "do any other players do this"
The Cowon D2 + can be set to increase the speed of playback on the player in steps without changing the original file, it may even save this setting as a profile as you can with EQ settings
I dont have mine with me so cannot say if it will double the speed or if there is pitch correction.
I am not sure about the earlier versions of the D2 but these can have the firmware updated to + very easily.
