Changed my mind....do I have any rights??

Options
I went to a shop on Saturday and bought a super-king sized bed and paid in full on my credit card.

The problem now is I've been advised that these pocket-sprung type beds shouldnt be bent at all. Since then I've been worrying about getting it up my staircase and I just dont think it will go without significant bending!

I went back to the shop today and explained the situation and I was told that I could cancel but they would charge a 20% cancellation charge (£200!!!) because they had already placed the order with the bed manufacturer. (btw, this is a standard bed - not a custom built one!)

I've got a horrible feeling that I dont have any rights here so any advice will be appreciated!!

Many thanks....

SteveP

Unfortunately you thought correct, you have no right to cancel what-so-ever and even there 20% cancellation fee is more than they are required to by law. They could if they wanted, charge a 100% fee.

Sorry. Maybe ask if you can cancel just the mattress and put the remainder (minus their fee) on another mattress that can be bent?
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

I think you're worrying far too much, the mattress will be fine.

I'm fairly sure a king would go up without too much bother but the additional problem is that last weekend was a 20% discount weekend making the super-king £800 and without that discount the king is also £800 - it just sticks in the throat to be paying the same for a king as we were paying for the super-king!!

They have given me the option to try the super-king and see if it will go up the stairs so I might try that and change it after if it doesnt!

Thanks guys.... I had a feeling that I'd messed it up!!

Who told you that pocket sprung mattresses can't be bent???

Pocket sprung mattresses are actually quite floppy, so as long as you only bend it, and don' crease, fold it, or roll it up then it will be fine.

Actually it's worse than that... £200 is 20% of £1000!

If its any help, I too purchased a pocket sprung mattress that cost £600... best money I have ever spent!!

At the time we lived in a very very small victorian cottage and well we had many corners to go round.. it was tight and exhausting but it went in okay and we literally bent it round every corner!

A few years ago I bought a bed and arranged for my mate to help me move into a flat a few weeks later in a big white van. Unfortunately said friend arrived in a Volvo Estate (d'oh!) and my matress underwent significant bending. Despite all the warnings it was fine.

Maybe you could ask the shop to reduce the re-stocking fee to £50 or £100 if you take vouchers instead of a refund (so you can a different matress from them), and say you'll take your business elsewhere otherwise?

Or just hope for the best?!
