As dealer stock the low miler would fly out the door and at a premium price.
However, I happen to live in a village that long ago the MG Rover dealer became a Daihatsu one and these little motorised shopping trollies are everywhere, driven by the ladies who lunch.
Going by the straw poll that everyone one of these grind along in second gear, slipping the clutch at a zillion revs to go uphill or trundling along on the flat main road at 25mph, going through every pothole or bumping up kerbs to miss the double-yellow lines, I'd steer cleer and get one that has actually been used.

The owner should get a prize for having just 850 miles in 5 years! She should have used bicycle instead.

I do cover more than that for my commute in just 2 weeks :D
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Why would you drive it like that? You don't own it you are merely borrowing it. Do you realise how disrespectful it is to do that?

Would you borrow a friends car and do the same? If not, why do you drive the hire car like that?

Because its a hire car....If I'm paying for something, I'll drive it how I want. And if getting my moneys worth means getting 6mpg, then so be it.

And as for the comments about modern engine oils preventing build up of crap etc, not quite accurate. Been looking at pics of the toyota IQ (a city car) with just a few thousand miles, and the engine is covered in mayo due to engine not getting up to temp.

    Why?............

assuming OP buys either car and does average mileage. The younger car will just be worth more than the low mileage one.

I tried to get examples via Glass' Guide but there is a descrepancy in that no cars of the same trim level span the right age groups. I suppose the 07 could have been sitting in a field somewhere though.

I think, and I'm fairly confident others will agree, that's a pretty selfish attitude to have. Basically: "I'm going to ruin something that someone else owns, simply because its not my problem".

    Nice.

Firstly how are you getting your "money's worth" since you need to replace the fuel you use??

Secondly you'll never get 6mpg from a car like that. In fact you'll struggle to get 6mpg at any time from a car unless it's a super car being driven hard.

Thirdly "if I'm paying for something I'll drive it how I want" - don'y you pay for your own car? Do you drive it like an idiot too?

Some people need to grow up....quickly

My advice would be to buy neither. I would not touch the 5 year old car with a bargepole. An average of 3.25 miles per week for 5 years will store up serious problems for the future, which other people have clearly stated above.

And as for an ex-hire car, whilst I'm sure may members of this forum respect other peoples property the reality of society today is that plenty of others don't. I have a couple of mates who worked for a hire car company many years ago, and they do get absolutely thrashed.

If I were you I'd continue looking, something else will crop up.

If I only had those 2 cars to chose from, I'd take the hire car. Modern cars can take being thrashed, but underusage causes far more serious problems.
