Graduate job!

Options
I'm going to be graduating this summer and am faced with the first job dilemma.
However, as a marketing student, most opportunities are based down in London but I really want to remain in the West of Scotland, as I don't want my partner to have to leave his present job.

If anyone has any ideas/knows of good websites/companies I would appreciate it! i have tried s1jobs but nothing so far!

cheers!

Hi Elzo, depends on what type of job you want theres various roles in marketing you can go into, do you have any ideas? admin/sales/public relations/research etc? Is it a marketing degree you are doing?

yep its a marketing degree. I'd like a job in advertising, but I realise that if I join a small business there's a chance I'd have to take on many aspects of marketing.
But I would consider any role!

Hi Elzo https://www.simplymarketingjobs.co.uk looks pretty good, https://www.workthing.com and http://www.jobsite.co.uk whilst searching for marketing jobs in scotland im sure a few will pop up. Theres no harm in sending your CV and covering letter explaining your current situation, to various local companies either, even if they have no current vacancies don't let that put you off - you never know! Good luck! :)

    Hey there Elzo!

I was in the same boat as you only 6 months ago, and Brent's got it right, Jobsite are a great site to go through. They got me my current role as a s/w Tester in London. I'd also recommend http://doctorjob.com/ (that's not a typo, there really is no "www" in their domain name!) They've got lots of graduate feedback reports from people of all different kinds of disciplines. Makes for some good reading.

Hope this helps. Good luck hunting for that job, and most important of all, should you hit any setbacks, (bad interviews/rejections) don't get discouraged!

    Elzo,

It is a bit of a myth that if you want to do marketing then you need to be in London. If you want to make it big in advertising then london is probably a better option but not your only option. Some of my friends went to work for the big advertising players in London and found it is not what it might have cracked up to be.

There are lots of graduate sites which have marketing related jobs for graduates or you could try getting hold of a copy of marketing week or marketing magazine as they often have graduate jobs in the back.

Another thing I would suggest if you want to be on the agency side is to have a look in your local business press/yellow pages and contact local marketing/advertising agencies. You might be surprised at how many small companies doing similar things as the big agencies there are all over. This might be a better option at getting some good experience as competition in London in advertising can be very fierce.

If you can, try and get a summer placement in marketing. Many big companies offer these which looks good on your CV and can give you a foot in the door. Competition is going to be tough and so the better your CV looks the better chance you will have.

PS I was also a marketing graduate and now work in marketing.
