All good reasons for getting a credit card. Whether you get a good card to begin with is another thing. Start with your own bank and see what they can offer you.

Nothing in the budget yesterday to make it harder to get credit. Infact, not much in the budget yesterday full stop. Personal tax allowances frozen and duty on magners going up 10% were the main negatives I saw.

I was thinking of getting a credit card too!
I will be paying in full each month (Have a couple thousand saved) - no other debts. but looking to improve my credit for the future

Is there anyway to get my experian credit score without paying their £8 a month or whatever charge? Ive done the 30day trial in the past to see my report, but not paid the £2 for my actual score.

I had a Lloyds TSB Credit card a few years ago, but only recently noticed it was cancelled/closed (prob due to not using it in soo long)

The score means very little and is not worth the fee it costs. Its worth checking your full report periodically - maybe every year or so (which costs £2 each time).

You could try your own bank to see if they will give you a card with a small limit (which is all you need to build up your rating), if not then you'll need to go for a sub-prime card but do make sure you set up a DD to pay in full each month so you don't get charged interest.

My credit card for lloyds was £1750 limit, but never got round to using it properly - didnt even notice it was closed till i checked my internet banking (still listed but credit limit £0 now due to account closure)

I might ask Hsbc - have my graduate account with them, with a £1250 overdraft which i also dont use (only occasionally but have my savings in a 2nd HSBC which i just transfer accross) Would like to cancel 1 of the HSBC accounts but have direct debits coming out of both so ended up keeping them!

Its easy to move dds from one account to another though.
Try HSBC - if you have past history and savings they'll be more likely to lend to you.
