 Really annoyed to find out this morning that I have been charged £25 for going £3 over the standard £250 overdraft for 24 hours in the middle of Feb. Whats even more annoying is a friend of mine tells me HSBC wouldnt have charged him that, just read they have a fair fees policy!! First Direct being HSBC under another name now look like they are just trying to rip me off.
Thinking about shifting my account.

Why are they trying to rip you off??
You have exceeded your agreed overdraft. I know it's only a couple of pound, but it still went over the agreed amount.0 -
They let you go up to £250 overdrawn, and don't charge you a single penny for doing so. I hardly think that's ripping you off - it is very generous, and something that not many banks will offer.0

You go over an agreement - breaking your side of the freebie arrangement - and they charge you according to the T&C's you agreed to. Another 'non-ripoff' ripoff.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
Do something amazing. GIVE BLOOD.0 -
HSBC let you do it a couple of times in any six month period, so a friend who works there tells me. They will only pull your charges on request though, ring up and ask to have the charges removed as it was an emergency, corrected within 24hrs and you don't have any history of comitting any similar actions. By all accounts they're a fair minded bunch, least you can do is ask. If they don't pull the charges then I guess you just have to accept that if you go over your overdraft you accept the terms and conditions you signed up to.0

Direct Charges:
Arrangement Fee Waivers
We will not charge an Arrangement Fee:-- for your first ever overdraft with us; or
- provided within the last 6 months, we have not agreed to an overdraft request from you; or
- for Informal Overdrafts if covering funds are paid in before the end of the day
Closing your account will be cutting off your nose to spite your face I am afraid. I don't know many other banks that have less onerous charging structures.
Besides you didn't overdraw by £3........your overdraft was actually £253.........perhaps it would be more appropriate to control your spending rather than complaining when you don't.0 -
If you phone they will probley take the charge of if it's an islated instance. They have done it for me.0
