I've never understood the UK popultion in terms of spending.
I agree we are much less stuffed than we were, but that doesnt mean we are not still stuffed.0 -

The debt figures tally.
Obviously we don't have March figures as yet, but debt is most definately on the rise again.
Consumer credit, which had been falling, is rising again. Last two releases show a rise of 0.1bn in December, and then 0.5bn in January. This is from a 0.4bn fall in November.
So looks like the figures are tallying. Just more debt, and this is feeding through to more sales.
Total debt is also rising again after falling last year.
Nov 2009 - £1,459
Dec 2009 - £1,460
Jan 2009 - £1,463
It's all good again, the economy is now fixed. Theres more debt out there, houses are getting more expensive and we have a possible fuel crisis on our hands.

Graham as I've pointed out to you many times, millions of people do not get hung up on doom and gloom in the way others might, they just don't. Life goes on, it really is that simple. One day you ought to try thinking more positively and not be anchored down by national debt and all the other nasties.
For the thousanth time - we paid for WW2 after 10 years of depression. We then built motorways and hospitals and all those 1950s schools and colleges DEPSITE THE DEBT.
Look at all the 1930s - 50s houses all over the place - vast swathes of London from Enfield to Wembly covered in them ALL BUILT DURING DIRE ECONOMIC TIMES
Do you get this?

Maybe if most people didn't have huge mortgages to service they would have more money to spend at the shops without getting into debt...0

I'd agree with this. Most people don't give a shіt about any of it now that it's not headline news on the telly every day. How many times do you still get asked by people if we're still in recession? How many times do you think you'll be asked what we're voting for come May 6th?
99.9% of people are thinking about the world cup or what that guy was thinking shagging some other bird while he was married to Cheryl Cole. People are fed up listening to any story with the words 'recession' or 'downturn' in. They've already got their fingers in their ears shouting 'LALALALA-I-CANT-HEAR-YOU' ...they don't care if there's another dip below 0% GDP or even know what that means.
They've switched off and are thinking about buying that big TV with the money they saved when the bank mysteriously started taking less money for the mortgage every month.0
