Coin electricity meters?

Hi

I've seen a studio flat that I really like - the only issue for me is that it has a coin electricity meter, where you actually have to feed coins in for there to be power.

I realise this is likely going to be more expensive, but I wanted to know how much on average people are paying with this method. It's a pretty small flat, but I'm not sure what company it's with or what the method of heating the flat is (sorry!) - I'm ringing the letting agent later so I should be able to find this out.

I live in a shared flat at the moment and am trying to weigh up whether I want to move on on my own or into another houseshare!

Suppliers dont use coin meters, the one in the property will be a private meter owned by the landlord. Before moving in ask the landlord what it's set to....and make sure that the electricity being metered is all yours!

The other thing to bear in mind is that the landlord is not allowed to profit from supply you with electricity so check the amount he is charging per unit against the 'standard' tariff of the major suppliers to confirm it seems reasonable. If it does not ask him how much is paying. Remember as a business he shouldn't pass on the higher rate of VAT to you.
