Bogus phone calls

Just got my Virgin ebill and noticed several calls to 0845 122 1609 which wasn't familiar. I googled it and it's a Men's Information Line (battered husbands???) which I certainly didn't make. I'm a single woman! I contacted Virgin immediately who advised that if I wanted it checked I would have to pay them £99 fee for an engineer to check if calls were made from my phone. Whilst I'm confident they were not, what proof do I have if he says they have!!!
Help!! Has anyone else had this. And if I don't pay Virgin's engineer, does this mean someone may call this number again and I'll be charged?

I have PM ed you with possible tele number for virgin media .0 -
What!!! £99 for an engineer!!! Service calls were free when I was a service engineer with NTL/VM! The only time you paid anything was if you created the fault.Nine times out of ten I & other tech's did'nt raise charges
(however the was time when a very rude & arrogant customer raised a fault for a bad TV picture,it turned out her VCR was turned off at the wall, & when I fixed it by turning the power on,I got the blame!!wth....)
Anyhoo....it could be that an installer Kroned another customers phone drop cable on top of yours in the street cabinet, been known to happen,0 -
Have to say very nice Virgin man called today (within 24 hours!) and said he'd tried the number and it transpired it was a Halifax/Bank of scotland number (which is odd, when I Googled it was definitely a Mens Help Line!) Anyway, I'm assuming he's right (will check tomorrow) so that means the bankers are up to their old tricks - 25 minute call to their 0845 number costs me £2.39 off peak! It's pathetic that banks even charge ridiculous charges to phone them!0

The bank is not charging ridiculous charges, Virgin Media is (10p/minute weekdays compares with BT's 2p/minute).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

What an absolute con! When so many companies only give out 0845 numbers (and of course we gullable consumers think it's a lo-cost call) they must be making an absolute fortune. :mad:0
