oh Lou darlin.... what a lovely post....

and if it's any comfort at all, no matter how much he seems changed, i betcha he still has all the memories and thoughts of his happiests times with your grandma right there in the forefront of his mind where they always were...

    take care chick....

Sorry I havent read back just yet but I just wanted to get this off my chest........

I have just been to see my beautiful Grandad, who I speak of regularly and I am heartbroken.

In the last few weeks we have noticed a slurring of his speach and confusions/ forgetfulness which has been checked out and has been deemed as normal wear and tear of the brain (he has had all the tests for anything nasty too) but it doesnt comfort me:(

He has been my main Father figure through me life, always dependable, a beautiful person who leads such a simple life.

He lost his wife, my Grandmother when she was only in her late 40s and has neither looked for or found love again, always content with his own company until they are together again.

But now he is a shadow of his former self, he is so confused and I can no longer hold a conversation with him, this has happened so quickly.

I am utterly heartbroken and am sat here weeping for him and for myself.....

Sorry if I have brought the thread down:(

Lou, as it's happened quickly, it could be something like a UTL, which the infection can affect the brain. A friend of mine said this happened to her grandad, that it was put off as 'old age'.

Are you up to pushing the dr's for a second opinon and tests?

He has had blood tests, an ecg, a brain scan and he had a memory test on Monday, which he failed miserably but he is refusing to go to the memory clinic.

To be honest the stress for him of going to the memory clinic will completely outweigh any benefit I think at 86 years of age he can pretty much say what he does and doesnt want to do.

He is having another blood test on Monday too, not sure what that one is testing for though.
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.

Was going to read back but I'm too excited ....

The interview got off to a dodgy start - the train was late and I couldn't find the office so I was 5 minutes late:eek:

Anyway, it broke the ice, we got chatting and the talk was good and ended with the next stage being references and a language test.

Fast forward 30 minutes, and Miss HR has phoned- they like me, I like them so can I be free for a chat with someone from our German office. Might take a while to set up

Fast forward 15 more minutes - Miss HR phones - is 3pm tomorrow all right?

Hi Lou - I am so sorry to hear of your grandfather - he has played an important part in your life - and it is understandable that you are feeling pretty desperate in this situation. Obviously the work scenrio has not helped and you are low. Use us to rant and rave at you can't hurt us, but I do feel for you more than you will ever know. Take care of yourself and grandad - give him a big virtual hug from us and some xxxxxxx :A

  • Yes, yes, Louise, get your Grandad checked for a UTI, that can have dramatic effects on functioning. They should have done it, but you never can tell...

Fantastic Luc - will recharge the positive vibes for tomorrow!

Lou, didn't think of the UTI thing but the others have reminded me, my friend's gran had similar symptoms that came on very quickly and that's what it was, definitely worth getting checked if they haven't already.
