Fed Up with NastyWet

and RBS in general. Considering we pretty much own them and the huge problems they have caused you would think they would be on best behaviour.

But in the last couple of years they have mucked up a re-mortgage application, messed my credit card about, and I don't like the way they enforce online messages about things which I haven't asked for. Today I got a text about the budget, it has got nothing to do with them and they do not have permission to invade my phone like that.

After 25 years it would be a big step to change banks, and yet I would be prepared to move if I could be fairly sure who to trust.

Barclays ? Nationwide ?

Maybe take a look at the page on this website, here.

A couple of points to bear in mind...

Santander/A&L don't have a great customer service reputation - probably worse than Natwest!

Who is best for your circumstances depends on whether you are in credit for all/most of the month, or go overdrawn a lot.
  • I unfortunately have a mortgage with Nationwide and have had no end of problems with them, branches with no authority to do anything, rude telephone staff. I have been looking for a current account and everyone seems to say First Direct, so I'll be swapping to them I think. Great service, free £25 overdraft.

Save yourself the pain, avoid Nationwide!

not sure what you mean "enforce online messages", but you should be able to stop getting their text messages. Call their customer services and opt out of non-transaction related communications.

Depends what you want from your bank. Great initial rates but very patchy service - Santander.

Fantastic service - First Direct - but you need a great credit rating and be earning >£1500 a month to get free banking. You can use HSBC branches to pay in (they own FD) but there is always a helpful person at the end of the phone 24 hours a day. Great mortgage deals at the moment too.

Ethical - Co-op/Smile - not many branches but at least any profits go back to customers and your money will be invested more ethically

Overseas use - Nationwide can't be beaten - service a bit patchy at the moment but again they are owned by their customers so won't try to rip you off as much.

    Good luck
