I would appreciate help with Acer laptop 5220

My Sister has an Acer Extensa 5220 laptop, had numerous virus's etc on last week, managed to get rid of those, and reload XP on to it along with AVG.
There is no sound from the laptop. Been on Acer website and downloaded the relevant drivers etc and they downloaded fine etc, but still no sound, what I am not doing wrong, I don't have the laptop in front of me, I am relaying the info over the phone, so I cannot have a look at the laptop, my Dell has a sound button on the front of the laptop, but my sister is saying the Acer doesn't, can you help me to help her get some sound.
I would most appreciate your help, and thank you in anticipation.

She has probably muted the sound or set the volume to zero.
Tell her to double click on the sound icon in the task bar, usually extreme bottom right, and increase the volume or deselect mute.0
