Laptop hunt

I'm looking for a laptop to replace my desktop for more portability and faster internet etc. I will be using it for professional use, so need a decent machine, but don't want to spend more than £600. These are my needs:

1.6 to 2.0ghz

512 mb RAM or 1gb RAM

80mb hard disk

Windows XP Pro (maybe home edition will do)

DVD Writer

Wireless and Modem

Can you help/point me in some good directions? Thanks very much.

A new laptop isnt going to make your internet connection quicker!

Profesional use what do you mean by that? normally that would be a business expence so why is the budget so low or is it £600+VAT?

All your requests can be gained with the dell inspiron 1300 but I wouldnt buy one myself as they are not the most portable laptop about big screens make laptops heavy.

You get those prices by amending (reducing) the warranty terms on the Dell website to (1-Year Collect and Return Support Service only), in my experience Dell kit is very reliable, so you don't need anything more, but if if you are worried about getting the 1 in 100 lemon, then you may wish to take up the extended warranty.

The default service option is the top one of these, if you look at the rest, then you can see how much you save by reducing the extended warranty, £152..

3-Year Basic: At Home On-site service PLUS online Multimedia training [Included in Price]

3-Year Standard: All elements of Basic PLUS Accidental damage cover and PC Security training [add £29.38 or £1/month1]
Support at home for less than £6 a month!

2-Year Basic: At Home On-site service PLUS online Multimedia training [subtract £58.75]

No service upgrade selected - 1-Year Collect and Return service only [subtract £152.75]

4-Year Basic: At Home On-site service PLUS online Multimedia training [add £17.63]

Also don't forget to use the evalue codes..

I'd always recommend a visit to ebuyer.com (I'm an IT Manager if that helps)

    Have a look at http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/102135/rb/20738851280

warranty for 3 years is £49-£107 ex vat.

    Aria do their Super Specials....

My Mum just bought one of these Digimate laptops for £380 + P&P.

Seems a decent enough laptop, I installed XP etc on it for her.
Add an extra 256 RAM (£14.68) and a copy of XP (XP Pro £91.42) and that meets your spec for a bit over £500 (apart from the hard drive, but then you can burn stuff to CD!)

Also comes with a 2 year collect and return warranty.

The first couple of times my Mum looked at this it was coming up at the regular price (around £500) but it keeps coming up as a Super Special, so she soon got it for £380. In fact it just showed as the full price when I looked, but it was £380 when I added it to my basket.

    Cheers
