VNC or TeamViewer can be used on your local network, I usually use Ultravnc or occasionally Tightvnc. TeamViewer has the added advantage of being able to easily connect to your network from outside (internet) without any security issues. Where VNC needs a secure connection and you would need to know the ip address = static/dyndns
T.V. also has a portable application which is very useful, allowing you to access you home/work computer from any where in the world.

one of the problems with some mobile broadbands is they wont support VPNs and the router you have over your LAN may not support a VPN either.

That only applies to VPNs that do not use UDP. OpenVPN does use UDP (or TCP which is not recommended)

Hang on a minute, I must have read something wrong somewhere....
I thought VPN was software based and just required the correct ports to be open on the router and or firewall????

The hardware/software distinction is irrelevant, are you considering the difference between the VPN being terminated on the router, and passing though the router and terminated on your PC?

    For pass-though:
    A firewall just needs configuring.
    A plain router just works.
A NAT router (like you probably have at home), will need special support if the VPN doesn't use UDP. For more info read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation

I use openVPN behind my NAT router with no problem at all. I port share TCP port 443 with my Microsoft Exchange server and simply forward incoming requests to the VPN servers's local IP address. It will then pass thorugh any non-VPN traffic to my email server. I use Port 443 so that I can pretty much guarantee access from behaind other people's firewalls e.g. corporate ones which might not allow outbound UDP, but will always allow TCP port 443

Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.
  • what about setting up the vm on vps and than connecting through it with a vpn ?

If you want a cheap standalone VPN server which only uses 3 watts, I recently bought a used Buffalo WHR-G54S router from Ebay for £14 delivered and then installed the TomatoVPN firmware on it.

This works a treat and supports most OpenVPN options. The DD-WRT VPN firmware also works on this router.

If you do decide to use the Tomato firmware, don't forget to donate some money to the author!

    Thanks
