OEM version but you can only buy it with certain qualifying peices of hardware.
People swear by eBay but I have heard of so many people getting ripped off with pirate versions off there.0 -

Edit to add : yeah i know how stoopid ive just made myself look hehehehehehe
I cannot download windows updates and my system is playing up so someone told me to get an original on. I did phone pc man but he didnt turn up.......plonker :mad:0 -
Hi Eagle
OEM stands for 'Original Equipment Manufacturer'.
I think that an OEM version of Windows XP is just a 'trade' version.
The same thing but not in a fancy box.
You are only allowed to buy OEM if you buy other computer equipment with it.
On ebay they get around this by giving you a piece of computer junk with it.
Maybe other ppl on the forum can explain it better than me.
On ebay you can get a genuine OEM Windows XP for about fifty pounds.
Just make sure it really is genuine though, from a reputable dealer.
edit I've just looked on ebuyer.com and Windows XP OEM is £60.57 including vat and postageNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Yes they are reputable, I've used them before.
At the website do a search/quickfind for item number 114048
With supersaver postage total cost is £61.04 today
Website is https://www.ebuyer.comNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -
Don't see why changing your copy of XP should make such a difference..
I think the problem is that you don't know anything about PCs.
Do you actually have XP installed or is it Window 98, 2000 or ME?0 -

ok dont take the pi*s
see this is why novices dont ask for help. Yeah ok so i know nothing about pc's which I explained, I told people I wanted original XP......maybe because mine was a fake copy and wont allow updates
and for the record I do have XP on.
God your post has really annoyed me, next time I wont bother.0 -
Don't let it put you off. Ebuyer is probably your best bet. I get most of my PC and electrical stuff from them. Just buy a new mouse or something that qualifies along with the OEM version of Windows and you'll be laughing.0

Actually, it wasn't meant to sound condescending. I just needed to find out some more details about your operating system.
So my comment meant that it would be more difficult to diagnose the problem because;
"and dont ask me what my system is cos I aint got a clue. I switch it on and thats about my limit"
So, take it easy and we'll start again.
Do you know if you have Service Pack 2 installed? When did the update problem begin?0 -
ok apologies, I did feel like you were taking the mickey. I said dont ask me about system so people wouldnt ask me things which I aint got a clue about.
I have Microsoft windows XP Professional, 2002 with service pack 2. I started having problems approx 2 months ago after I tried to download updates. My main problem is my screen just freezing and wont allow me to do anything or my PC just shuts off and restarts.
I have McAfee anti virus on but have not been able to do a scan because every time I try the system freezes. I even tried to do a free online scan but again cant do a full scan.
I have been told that my problems are most likely to be the fact that I cannot install updates and was advised to purchase a genuine one so i can install updates.
Thanks.
edit to add the PC man still has not called round so I have now given up on him.0
