but will be a tadge slow if you want to do anything with photos.

    WHAT?!

I run Photoshop, Dreamweaver & Flash at the same time on my Celeron-M 1.5ghz with 256mb RAM... (As well as a lot of other stuff)

Although I would say Sony laptops are overpriced, just like all Sony stuff.

Can get a Centrino with those specs for that kind of money if you shop elsewhere.

dreamweaver is hardly a good example, its just a glorified version of notepad with some graphics and stuff thrown in.... flash and photoshop on the other hand prove the point - both quite high end programs, if they work together, your not gonna have a problem with processing power.

vaios are a bit overpriced, but honestly, i wouldnt touch an HP, compaq, IBM or any of the other crap that is quite mainstream from the likes of dixons and pc world. Fact is, even though sony is overpriced, their stuff (andnot just laptops) works good, looks good, and stays that way, and for most people, i cant think of anything else they would want

I'm currently using my second Vaio, wouldn't consider another make. I dropped the first Vaio and it fell quite heavily on the hearth. I thought that would be the end of it. Although the screen hinge was quite badly damaged the PC still worked! I had it 3 years or more before replacing with current machine, and still use the old one when grandchildren come to stay.

Look for the widescreen (Diamond X)? not sure of name, the screen is really clear.

    Good luck

The point that I was trying to make was that I could run them all at the same time without a problem, along with several instances of Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera (yes, I have all 3 installed) plus the stuff I run in the background (AV, Firewall, GAIM, mIRC). The 256mb of RAM becomes evident after a while but that's cheap to upgrade.

For the lower end of £1000 (£600-£800) (I spent £350), I'd probably buy an IBM/Lenovo, solid machines (or used to be).

Anything more than that would be going on a Dell Latitude.

Well said. Topic drifted a bit. You should be able to get a laptop for your needs for <£400

I've had my current Sony Vaio laptop for 3 years now and I'm still pleased I made the purchase ;) . What swayed it for me was the styling (it looks like a quality machine IYKWIM), the X-Black screen (which looks miles better than all its competitors when compared instore) and the light touch keyboard! These may all be minor points, but let's face it - within a given budget the technical specs of most machines will be pretty similar, so it's these little touches that make the difference.
