Claiming Insurance but have only had policy for two months

Options
was wandering if anyone could help me, i changed insurance companies at begining of June due to changing my bank account over and not taking out their insurance anymore. Thing is, yesterday my daughter broke the screen of my laptop by shutting the lid down on a pen she hadn't seen on the keyboard. Now my insurance covers accidently damage, but i'm a bit nervous to claim due to not being with them for long... Is there a specific time frame on claiming, or should i just ring them up...

Any help would be much appreicated.

Why are you nervous? accidents happen and thats what you have insurance for.

Give them a call and explain as you have just done on here.

It will be fine - no there is n time limit to wait - some companies will have an internal timescale which could identify fraud but would only be one indicator

Whilst I agree with gazza in principle, this sort of claim (accidental damage on something which could be obsolete and which is the sort of thing people often want replacing ...) is VERY prone to fraud, so I should expect some degree of honest scepticism from the claims handler.

If you can demonstrate that you had accidental damage cover before and after the change of insurers, that would help your case if they do challenge you.

If this is the first time you've had accidental damage cover, then they would be within their rights to be suspicious, but at the end of the day if you are claiming honestly you should succeed in your claim (but maybe after a degree of faffing about).

Worst case will be that they send out an assessor, you show them the broken laptop, they say 'oh, OK then' and pay - maybe a bit of hassle, and they may decide not to bother, but as you are genuine, they should pay.

I wondered if your original query came from the cancellation clause - you can cancel a policy after you've taken it out - usually for 14 days, but you can't cancel if you made a claim in that time. This may have been at the back of your mind?

No wasn't thinking of cancelling, just worried as it's only been a couple of months, my friend told me to leave it for a few months, but that's not right either. Was just in a dilema, am going to be brave and call them today, and as i'm not a fraud they can throw what they like at me and i'll be able to show i'm not... Many thanx for your comments...

Certainly early claims on policies are one of the indicators of fraud (also includes things such as your occupation, where you live etc) but going over the "score" for fraud only triggers deeper investigation and isnt an automatic claim rejected/ policy voided/ loaded to the Fraud Registry (CIFAS).

It is much better to claim now and be honest than wait 3 months and then truly commit fraud by changing the date of loss.

I moved my home insurance to Barclays, after being claim free form the Abbey for seven years.

Low and behold two about six months after moving some git nicks my video camera. Barclays paid up no problems.

Didnt care about the camera. The video of me winning a martial arts competition was in it !!!!!!!

Dont worry they will be ok im sure.

Different insurers have different rules - in the quite spell for claims (which it is at the moment with the good weather) for home insurance we would appoint a claims inspector for anything over £400 and a loss adjuster for anything over £800 (both basically being the same other than one is an employee the other is from an outside company)

Different insurers have different rules but it certainly isnt unusual
