FM Radio

They won't switch FM off until enough people are using digital radio. Enough people won't use digital radio until the crappy DAB system is phased out and replaced with DAB+ or DMB, which offer much better audio quality (they use AAC+ rather than MP2) and better reception.poppy100

Anyone ever got DAB to work satisfactorily in a moving vehicle?
Not around here, and we used to think FM was bad.
yes, fine, starting last week, and still with aerial temporarily stuck to the windscreen by the tax disc
I nearly had some break in of a local FM station near Birmingham, but that isn't actually a DAB issue at all as this is one of those add-on FM output adapters, and I haven't yet read the instructions or added a choice of other output frequencies
not a single receive glitch of a trip of 300 miles the other day0 -
I paid £37+ for a net radio with dab and FM in Jan from M&S so they can be cheap granted maybe no always that cheap. It also streams mp3/wmv from pc
Dab/FM/Internet radio £37.82 or slightly more inc delThe digital bill that is currently going through parliament does enshrine that FM etc. will be turned off in 2016, but it wont happen as DAB is a mess.
What needs to happen is DAB to be replaced with a better standard i.e. like one in use in the rest of the world. DAB is a major mistake and the costs to fix it are fairly large hence why everyone keeps skirting around it - but its going to have to be fixed in the next 5 years.
My advice if your after the best quality home radio - Get an internet radio. Better quality than FM, only issue is internet radios aren't cheap and start at £120 for stand alone radios. But for you and your new radio, FM will be here for the foreseeable future at least.0 -
The wifes just turned up with a new FM (Not Digital) radio from Tesco. But is'nt the FM signal about to go ?
FM stands for Frequency Modulated and the usual signal is normally on some frequency like 100MHz. Even though this is a good frequency most won't use it cause it does not have nearly the same speeds that most prefer. Something like few GHz.
For these reasons I don't think that the normal radio is going anywhere. If you think that this is not quite what's happening comment.

Sorry, but this is one of the most idiotic comments I have ever read on the techie forum. It's wrong on so, so many levels.FM stands for Frequency Modulated and the usual signal is normally on some frequency like 100MHz. Even though this is a good frequency most won't use it cause it does not have nearly the same speeds that most prefer. Something like few GHz.poppy100 -
You do have to admit it was an interesting post though and has enlivened the tedium of this thread.
Furthermore I'd love to know the source of the stuff he's smoking.....0 -
FM isn't going to be turned off in 2016. What is actually proposed is that the national radio stations (Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 together with possibly Classic FM) will move to DAB allowing more space for small community radio stations on FM. This may be a good thing, depending on your point of view.
