Are People Sad Enough To Fall For The Stamp Duty Con

Labour hoping people will rush out now and buy that £199,950 house as they are saving a huge £1999.50 on it.

thing is it's an extra amount that has to be covered from savings rather than mortgage. it's an extra burden that ftbs often struggle with along with needing to kit out and equip a new home.

it's hardly revolutionary. a bit sad that camerons main criticism of the budget so far seems to be that the stamp duty thing is a tory idea. does it matter whose idea it was? probably quite a few people have had that idea. it's not the theory of relativity or anything.

It's not so much the saving (well it is) but the duty has to be paid up front, so it's made it significantly easier to get the initial funds required for a purchase.

Well I think the Conservatives will be in power by the next budget so it looks like it will be a fairly permanent con.;)

  • Yes, many people will be mentally spending that 2K on shiny stuff for the new purchase. At a prohibitively expensive and stressful time, it is an instantly visible and obvious bit of saving. As taxes go, it's a particularly clumsy and unfair one, so being relieved of it is clearly appealing. A rather good vote-winner, I'd say (not that I have any intentions of voting Labour).

The point i am trying to make is that prices are still way too high. Labour is no doubt hoping this little con will cloud peoples judgement and make them buy that overpriced house.

Buy a house overpriced by tens of thousands of pounds but save 2 grand in the short term

I'm getting confused with this FTB criteria

Does that mean someone buying a house who is not a FTB subject to stamp duty the same as before?
