Advice please - missing parcel

Options
I'm just after some advice please as I'm really not sure what to do.

I had been away for a week during which time the postman attempted to deliver a parcel to my address. Usually our postman leaves any packages on the front porch, but when I arrived back last night I discovered an undated card had been put through the letterbox telling me that the parcel had been left in the recycling box.......

After a thorough search, I can find nothing and can only conclude that the binmen decided to throw my parcel in with the recycling the previous day, despite the fact that the box was otherwise completely empty. I have checked with neighbours and I then telephoned the council. The lady from the council was helpful and apparently spoke to the collection team who claim that there was nothing in the box at all. I have also telephoned the Post Office to see if the postman has taken it back to the depot, but they have no trace of it either. I live on a quiet, private road and find it difficult to believe that somebody would go through my recycling box to find something to steal.

I assume that the package was an ornament I had been expecting shortly which was valued at about £25. Is it worth me chasing this up further or shall I just resign myself to the fact that I am out of pocket? :(

Thanks for any thoughts.

Assuming that this is an item that you have purchased, it's not (in theory, at least) your problem. The person that sold it to you has failed to deliver the item, and so has not delivered on their part of the contract.

If you contact the seller and tell them that it was never delivered, they should refund you and claim the loss from the Post Office (assuming they have proof of posting).

this is why no posties should be doorstepping/hiding packages
all items should be returned to delivery offices

Thanks for your response fwor. I can't be certain what was in the parcel as there were no details at all on the delivery card other than that the package had been left in the recycling box. I can only assume it was a recent purchase from eBay and I'm not sure I would feel comfortable about claiming money back from the seller. However, I do feel that either the Post Office or the local council have been completely incompetent at my expense.

I am going to the Post Office with the delivery card tomorrow as the lady who works there said that they should be able to work out who delivered it and we can take it from there.

I just find it hard to believe that a valuable parcel was left in, what is essentially, a rubbish bin. :(

well hold on,you were quite happy for packages to be left before?
yes it shouldnt have been left where it was but you cant have it both ways
you should claim back from the seller and they in turn can claim from RM

Hi custardy, thanks for your responses. We've only lived here a few months and I have only ever had one package delivered here before when I have been out. The previous occupants told me that the usual postman always left packages in the front porch which is private and out of view.

Personally I would much rather a package was left with a neighbour or returned to the sorting office for collection. I know people make mistakes, but I still can't understand why it was left in the recycling box.
