Certainly garages rates are open to negotiation but for the majority it is actually cheaper with the buying power of an insurance company than it is as an individual - they will also often provide a courtesy car "free of charge" which is much cheaper than having to pay for a higher car or alternative transport costs

You could always as well let the claim go through your insurers and then when its settled call them and ask how much it was and you could always pay the claim back anyhow

I'm not sure it works like that.
The insurance company at this stage will still have got involved and spent their own admin effort on sorting out the claim.
I'm not sure you can do it this way.

The majority of inusrers allow you to "buy back" the claim and they just suffer the admin costs but it may be worth checking with the insurers first.
