:(Completely baffled by home phone options - only ever had BT. Can I use 18185 override provider as well as Primus for cheap line rental???? Is it worth the hassle? Appreciate any help out of the quagmire.

Welcome to the MSE forums valcar.
Only BT is required (by the regulator) to allow access to the likes of 18185. Some other line providers do too but any/all could bar such access if they wanted to.
The lowest BT residential line rental is £11.54 and Primus's is £9.99 (I believe Martin has been quoting £9.15 but I cannot find that price) so there's a potential saving of £1.55/month. Whether that's worth any possible hassle is for you to decide but, personally, I wouldn't bother.
EDIT 14:26 - the £9.15 rate Martin has been quoting appears to be a 'special' available only if you sign up via homephonechoices.co.uk. That would increase the potential saving by 84p.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Thank you so much Heinz. Wonderful to have some clear advice from someone who understands the set up. Primus - hassle not worth the saving. 18185 - hopefully worth it.
