What is the difference between a British call centre, and one overseas?

They're both going to have foreigners in them that don't understand English.

All of our call centres are in the UK but one of our largest is in Leeds which has a very high asian community. When I have been listening into calls I have heard hundreds of customers "check" if the person they are talking to is actually in the UK because they have an asian name and accent.

I don't care who I speak to or where.

I DO care about the fact I want someone to understand me, me to understand them and can actually deal with my query whilst understanding what I want.

I love First Direct. Its always okay - thats done, its sorted, thats fine, a straight yes or no and I have never had them put me on hold to check something - not ever.

A far cry from the same HSBC group - I had an account with HSBC and refused to call them. For ANY query, I would go into the local branch and talk to the guy on the desk. Long, slow process.

I couldn't agree more. When I was having problems with my asda home shopping (they charged me twice) I spoke to a lovely Indian lady (in an Indian call centre) who was very easy to understand, who understood me perfectly and who was polite helpful, but most importantly did what she promised and sorted the mess out for me.

Unfortunately that seems to be the exception rather than the rule with overseas call centres :( I have had dealing multiple dealings with Sky, mbna, asda (over a separate issue) and many more co's that use overseas call centres, that have been an total disaster, I can't understand the person on the end of the phone, they can't understand me and everything has ended up being 3 times more drawn out and complicated than it needed to have been.

If on the rare occasions I get a cold call from a co and it's obvious that they are using an overseas call centre, I apologise and put the phone down. I actively avoid co's who use os call centres now. I only ever really call co's when I have a big problem (do online banking, and email rather than call) I just don't need the extra hassle and stress of trying to talk to someone who hasn't got a clue what I am going on about, or can't understand a word that comes out of my mouth.

Which is fair enough, I hope you only recruit those who speak English as well as us "natives"....
