Eating with locals when travelling

I don't know if anyone on here has heard of this site - eat with a local dot com (no spaces)?? A friend of mine is going to do a bit of travelling and was sent this site as an idea, meet local people, dine with them, sounds a bit like couch surfing but with food! Could be a great money saving way to travel and get local knowledge.....? What do we think? Would you do it? Invite a total stranger/traveller into your home for tea? I probably would

Added to the above - I've been reading through some of the posts on this site, and they all seem from a little while ago, not much current so maybe its not used much?

I had a look at the website (think I found the right one) I like the idea and think it'd be a great way to meet people but I don't think I could do it myself.
Cooking for someone is a really personal thing & purely from the hygiene aspect I'd be worried , last time my mil cooked for us I walked past the kitchen timed perfectly to see her sneeze directly into the saucepan of, she made no attempt to turn away from the stove or cover her nose etc. Now she was also cooking for her son so no matter what she thought of me she def loves him & she is a reasonably bright person. So a complete stranger who may not give a hoot about me might do a heck of a lot worse than sneeze into the pot.shudder
Then again I may be uptight.Booo!!!0 -
Violetta - how funny! But also made me cringe..... When I asked my friend about cooking for strangers she was a bit concerned they'd break something, we never thought about people coughing and sneezing into the food. My son often travels abroad so I'm going to use him as a guinea pig and see if I can match him up with a family to dine with!

I have dined with a lovely family in Boston, a young man in Marrakech and a very interesting lady in Meridith, USA. All members of eatwithalocal. If we worried too much about germs and breaking china we would never venture out of the house!
It really enriched my holiday meeting the local people and gleaning information about the surrounding area over a tasty meal. Eatwithalocal.com adds a new dimension to your holiday and introduces you to events and sights not listed in the usual guide books.0
