Credit Card charge when statement not received

Options
Help please.....

I am after some advice and hope someone can help.

I have a 0% balance transfer credit card with MBNA which I have used for a balance transfer. Last month I did not receive a statement through the post (didn’t realise this), and as I don’t have a DD set up on the account the card did not get paid.
I received a call from MBNA Monday (which was the first I heard of it) stating I was in arrears, so made a payment to him over the phone. Today I received a statement for this month through the post and on it was a late charge and interest charge and the 0% has now been lost due to failing to meet T&C’s.
I contacted MBNA this morning and hoped that as I have never done this before (had the card 9 months) they could refund the charges and I could set up a DD to avoid this happening again. They said ‘NO’ and that it’s not their fault and they may be able to offer 1.5% rate on the transfer.
I am now waiting a call-back from a manager, and hoped people could advise me my rights other than paying off the card.
As stated this is the first time and I paid up straight away...... any advice would be appreciated.
Many Thanks

You're responsible for making the min payment regardless of whether you receive statements or not, that ones' pretty black and white. And if you think about it - how can they know that you didn't receive the statement?

The late charge "might" be refunded, but the thing you obviously want more than that is the 0% promotion reinstated - although you've had the benefit of it for 9 months I suppose. They'll possibly be recording a missed payment at the CRA's too - which in itself isn't a problem if the rest of your credit report is good.

Advice is always to have a DD for at least the minimum which hopefully you have now.

Best thing to do is to set up direct debit which really you should have done 9 months ago to avoid any late charges or removal of 0% offer. You may argue with them that you did not received the statement but surely you must be able to access account online? mbna don't have to reinstate the 0% rate & unfortunately there is very little you can do.

    Take the 1.5% and run
  • Thanks for the reply's. I have had the interest refunded but not the late charge, and the rate is now 18.9%. I have therefore decided to pay off the card.

Does anyone know if I can still get the £12 late fee back?
