Installing a wireless optical mouse on a laptop

Hi there
I often end up at this site when I'm trying to solve a PC problem, so I'm hoping you can help me, as I'm getting nothing on Google.
I've got a new Asus laptop, which I'm trying to set up as I want it, and I hate using the touchpad. On my current laptop I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse 4000, and I'm trying to install the same model on to the new laptop.
I've downloaded the software and it tells me that it, and the mouse, is working perfectly. The green light is on on the USB stick and the red light is on on the mouse. But it doesn't work.
I'd like to get to the situation where, if the mouse is plugged in it overrides the touchpad. But if the mouse is not plugged in, then the touchpad works (so that if I'm on the move I don't need to carry the mouse with me).
Hope I've been clear, and that someone might have some advice.
Many thanks.

Unless you disable a touch pad it will work alongside any mouse you install - that's the default option.
If you've installed a mouse and it isn't working then either you've screwed up the install somehow or the mouse is either broken or the battery is flat. I'd suggest you try it in another machine to confirm that.0 -
Hi Kwikbreaks, thanks for your reply.
I did wonder if it was the mouse that was the problem, but it was fine last time I used it. I only bought a new one for this laptop because the scroll wheel wasn't working smoothly. The battery in it is new. All the lights are on as you'd expect. Everywhere I've checked says that it's functioning perfectly.
I'm worried about disabling the touchpad to see if the mouse will then kick in, as what if it doesn't?!
On my current (Dell) laptop, there's an option to disable the touchpad when a USB pointing device is present, so that's what I was hoping to do with the new one.0 -
There's a little button in the slot where you store the USB stick on the mouse. If you press this it should reconnect to the transmitter.
The only other thing that I can think of is that you are using the wrong USB stick with it. You mentioned that you had another one. Are you sure that you're using the right stick for the right mouse?
Good luck!0
