FREE Legal Registry Cleaner from Microsoft

Options
Hi,

My PC was running slower than a snail going backwards.

My Anti-Virus and Spyware programmes couldn't deal with it.

Thanks to MoneySavingExpert.com, I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.

This is a free Anti-Virus and Spyware programme that installs quickly, though you must remove or disable your existing programmes first.

Then I noticed that Microsoft also offer a free online Registry scanner. Once it has verified that your copy of Windows is genuine, it starts the scan. It also carries out an Anti-Virus and Spyware sweep, as well as defragging your harddrive.

It took a couple of hours, but it identified and removed 1,205 'items' from my Registry. When it finished my PC is running sweeter than ever.

As a new user I am not allowed to post this with links.

So, this online wonder can be found at the Windows Live webpage. Once there, use the search engine for OneCare Safety Scanner. The top of the page will say 'Get a free PC safety scan'.

Once you've found it, just click on the 'Full Service Scan' button, follow the instructions, and it does the rest.

Remember, this is an online service, you can't download it, but it is really worth it.

Hope this helps

    Hi fnc63,

Many thanks for that. Frustrating that I couldn't post the link myself.

    What does this do?
The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

    Hi quidsinquentin,

This free programme will erase any trojans, viruses, spyware and other nasty stuff that is imbedded in your registry.

Ordinary Anti-Virus and Spyware programmes don't, as a rule, look at or clean your Registry, so the rubbish just stays there and accumulates, eventually clogging and slowing your PC down.

I am amazed at the difference it has made to my PC. The best bit is that it is free from Microsoft.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Zero Delta

Once my Norton AV subscription ends I am going to try Microsoft Security Essentials.

It is only "Free" in the sense you don't hand over any money, but don't think Microsoft is going to give you anything unless it is going to get some return on the investment.

Microsoft Big Brother will be checking your PC for pirate/unlicenced Microsoft software and operating system, so I wouldn't use it if you don't have official MS software.

If people are using pirate and unlicensed software then they deserve to get caught out, Microsoft have done it right by only giving it to genuine MS products

Your registery could also contain a lot of files for legal trial versions of software you may have used, but have since expired e.g. a lot of new computers come with a 60 day Office trial.

it won't remove any files from your computer. the registry is like a database of settings used by windows and other applications. when you uninstall a programme, sometimes, bits get left behind, like files or folders (as you've noticed) or entries in the registry, which you can't see unless you go and actually look at the registry (not recommended).

running a registry cleaner will clean out any "dead" references in the registry, left behind by old programmes. doing that, makes the registry more compact and efficient and therefore, it can improve your overall performance.

it's a good idea to take a backup of the registry before you clean it. this programme will probably ask you if you want to do that, or do it automatically.
