Hi,
My PC was running slower than a snail going backwards.
My Anti-Virus and Spyware programmes couldn't deal with it.
Thanks to MoneySavingExpert.com, I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials.
This is a free Anti-Virus and Spyware programme that installs quickly, though you must remove or disable your existing programmes first.
Then I noticed that Microsoft also offer a free online Registry scanner. Once it has verified that your copy of Windows is genuine, it starts the scan. It also carries out an Anti-Virus and Spyware sweep, as well as defragging your harddrive.
It took a couple of hours, but it identified and removed 1,205 'items' from my Registry. When it finished my PC is running sweeter than ever.
As a new user I am not allowed to post this with links.
So, this online wonder can be found at the Windows Live webpage. Once there, use the search engine for OneCare Safety Scanner. The top of the page will say 'Get a free PC safety scan'.
Once you've found it, just click on the 'Full Service Scan' button, follow the instructions, and it does the rest.
Remember, this is an online service, you can't download it, but it is really worth it.
Hope this helps

For some reason it won't run on my Windows 7 machine despite using IE8 it complained that i was using an incompatable browser.
I'll try it on my XP laptop later. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
penrhyn,
- a guess - because you already use ' security essentials ' ?.
Anyway if my old memory serves me well ' live one care ' was / is superseded by ' security essentials.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Possibly, it runs fine on my XP machine, which now seems to boot up a little quicker.
I'm aware there is a different version for Windows 7, I'm not using MSE.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

i have ccleaner but doesnt that just remove it all? i have been lead to believe you should only remove useless registries and that some are needed and you can get problems if you remove the needed registries. i got an email from norton trying to sell me their utility software which identifies the useless registries.0 -
I have used liveonecare for quite a while now,the first time i ever used it it came up with a load of registery issues that it resolved.
I also use Ccleaner,this i use a little more often,live onecare i use about once a month.Forum spellcheckers are the pitts.0 -
It does download on your PC , and you can then use it again. Sadly it will not work with Firefox (nor other 3rd party browsers AFAIK) there is a link from the site to link for FF users which suggests using IETab, of which course does not work with FF 3.6+. So basically Microsoft offer you a choice of browser with their well known browser choice update (see MSE forums ad nauseam) but they still stop you using other bits of their free software, still I almost download IE 6 so I could use it .
Rant over about MS and EU, I actually used this this morning for my friends' (yes there are more than one of them... grammar police:D)pc it took a while and then some but it was my time and their coffee. It was ok but I still used Malwarebytes and CCleaner afterwards.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . You need to install an ActiveX plugin for the scanner to function correctly, that's why it's exclusive to Internet Explorer. Not sure what correlation that has to with the EU ruling though.0
