AbiWord 2.8.2 - No Spell Checker

hello,
i was wondering if anyone else uses abiword and knows how to get the spellchecker working?
up until yesterday, i was happily using the previous version of abiword and the spellchecker worked fine, but the only problem was, it used an american dictionary.
i upgraded to the new version yesterday and at the same time, installed the british dictionary, but now, it's not automatically spellchecking and when i go tools > check spelling, that option is greyed out.

Unsure...but OpenOffice would be a better upgrade if youre not willing to pay for MS Word0
