Obviously the documentary is going to report the worst scenarios - its sensationalist journalism at its most cynical. I find that almost as exploitative and sickening as child labour.

Yes it does happen in some cases and its wise to know where not to buy if you want to help eradicate these things but not all cocoa will be harvested so unethically and notbuying any chocolate in protest would result in good manufacturers being penalised with bad and the people whose livelihood depends on the cocoa being in demand will be the ones to suffer most. If in doubt go fair trade...

The cynicism of the reportage on these so called documentaries is one of the reasons I don't watch any more...

I actually enjoy the cynicism....if it gets more than me thinking about where their choccy comes from then it's good! Whereas, I use cocoa butter anyway so don't think I'll ever be away from chocolate :)

I agree it is important to raise awareness but does the end justify the means? Is it right for the TV companies to exploit the bad fortune of others to get ratings and so earn money? Doesn't that compound the abuse?

You've got a schooling system that tries it's damnest to suppress people thinking for themselves, and the broadcast media is there to tell you what to think to fill the void.

Obviously someone wants to do a downer on chocolate - perhaps its the "war on obesity" hotting up again?

I'm watching Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, I'm sure at least some of it is scripted but it's fun.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
