  • Fruitcake I am so pleased for you and your family that things are finally working out with your son. Your situation exactly sums up what my dad always said to us

"I can't tell you what to do, only to give you the advice and hope you take it"

Thankfully we did. All too often these days kids no longer have any respect for their parents, family, everyone else about them, and especially anyone in a position of authority. In exactly the same position as your son, my cousin was the same in a car until he put himself in hospital seriously injured and his friend walked away unscathed. He also found out after the accident that his step-dad had cancelled just that day the insurance policy for the car as they had had an argument (they both got charged with that one). I went to see him in hospital that night and had only one sentence for him - just be glad that its you lying there in that position and not your best friend as it could quite have easily been you that walked away and him carried. I then left him to contemplate and guess what? He never ever treated a car or any other person with anything but respect from that day on.

I don't know what that officer said to your son, and you will probably never know either, but there are far too many people out there that fail to realise that a car is not only a mode of transport but is also a lethal weapon with more power than the user will ever know and should be respected by everyone. I hope that both you, your family, and your son will once again learn to respect each other, but I'm sure you are half way along that road already.

And to echo the thoughts of pavlovs dog and hugoSP, I would also recommend that you write to the Chief Constable of the force regarding this. All too often Police Officers do hear the results of situations that they deal with and I'm sure he would be pleased to find out that in this case he has made a HUGE difference to some lives.

    Good luck.
