Unsolicited phone call to children

Hi

My husband received a phone call earlier on this evening. The caller said that they wanted to do a telephone survey with a 12 to 14 year old in the household (we think regarding IBM but that may not be right). My husband said that the children were in bed. Does anyone know if this is legal or not? I will not allow them to speak to my children but I find it quite disconcerting that they are able to ask to speak to minors. We have registered with the telephone preference service but sometimes get unsolicited calls slipping through the net. Has anyone else had this sort of phone call?

Thanks.

I'd have said they'd have to wait eleven years then.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Do you have caller ID? Use it.

Why did you confirm to strangers that you had young children [in bed no less] at your address. Sounds very odd to me.

There's no law against adults speaking to children. Though obviously it's up to the parents to decide if they want to allow it under these circumstances.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Actually, there is laws in England and Wales about 'grooming' and a separate law in Scotland.

Since when was speaking to a child the same as grooming them?

Yes, that's what I thought when they amended the Sexual Offences Act in England & Wales.
