I would be more tempted to phone up the new landlord to understand when the tenancy is supposed to commence and get it moved so there is no overlap whatsoever, rather than just passively waiting for the previous landlord to take me to court for unpaid rent or withold the deposit...

Get your friend to call the new landlord to prevent any confusion rather than unecessarily expose themselves to an extra month's rent..
